Writer Weekend Fun!

This weekend Tiana Smith and I hosted a dinner for writers here in Utah.

Guys.

There's nothing better than meeting up with your own breed of people.

Soooooo fun.

And there are so many of us here! Someone needs to do a study and figure out why there are so many Utah writer/bloggers.

DPK's wife, DPK, Me, Julia, and Shelly--------->

<------We had awesome food with a sneak peek shot of DPK in the background...

Cute pic of the fabulous Donna K. Weaver, Laura, and Julia King------->

<-----DPK and his wife, and "You wouldn't believe she's had 5 kids" Shelly Brown...

Me and Tiana.--------> Not sure what kind of look I'm sporting with my orphan-messy hair... but heh, it was a busy day, alright?

<----More of the same with Caryolyn Vawdrey

<-----And the life/celebrities of the party. Shelly and Chad Morris.

Coolest. People. Ever.

We made Chad tell us his publishing adventures and forced him to give us free swag about his upcoming book 'The Inventor's Secret' out in March by Shadow Mountain Publishing.

Cue Cover Plug:

Do you guys have writers near you? If you do, I highly encourage you to reach out and connect. It's amazing how much inspiration and support can come from just getting together and talking the talk. It's so easy to sometimes feel so alone on this journey, and just knowing that we're not can make the biggest difference.

Red. Head. Out. :D

  1. Oh. So. Envious! I live in a little mountain town in the middle of nowhere next to about nothing. This looks like so much fun! Glad you all had a great time-- looks like a fantastic group.

  2. That looks like fun! I don't know any writers in my city, but I could reach one in a couple hours.

  3. It was a blast! Next time we'll have to do it at your place ;)

  4. I'm so jealous! I agree, what IS it about writers in Utah?? Not fair.

We have a writer's support group in AZ. You might have heard of it. We're the Typelings.

  5. I don't even know how I would find other writers in Arkansas. I know a few people who have self-pubbed and my cousin writes, but she's only 16 and she's told me that she's not all that serious about it. It would be really interesting and fun, I just don't know how I'd do it. :)

  6. Eep! Such a fun fun fun evening! I miss you already. :( I tell you...having such an amazing evening with "my kind of people"--writers, made all the difference in the world. I echo Morgan's words to reach out in your area to other writers. It build confidence and produces phenomenal relationships! :)

  7. I wish I had writer friends close by. *sigh* :)

  8. Oh my godsh, Morg - it seems like you had so much fun! I'm getting a bit jealous!

I really would like to meet some of you in person instead of emailing and talking to you on your blog! I'm trying to form some close friendships online but it's so difficult. I know we're friends. I even call you friends because I know we have a bond somewhere. We just have to connect it, don't we!

I have a few Wisconsin writers by me and yes, they live VERY CLOSE that I sometimes think, could I run into them at anytime?

    Great post, Morg! :)

  10. The meeting must have been fun.
Maybe I should organize a meeting for actors too.
Yes, it's easy sometimes to get feel lonely in the business.
    Connecting is really important.
    Thanks for sharing your experience!

  12. Fun! I can't wait to do this next month. Yay!

  13. Please clue the rest of us in when you learn the reason behind the impressive ratio of Utah writers to the general population. I've been wondering for the longest time what fluke of nature dumped half of all writers in one single state.

Glad you all had fun. I bet it was a blast.

    1. LOL. I know, right? There's an amazing writing energy out here for a state so ding-dong far away from New York.
We would welcome you with open arms, Jeff :)

    2. Well, if you ever get near the North Carolina neighborhood, give me a yell. We'll make it something to write home about. ;-)

  15. I can't tell you how jealous this makes me.. I'd love to have some of that atmosphere to feed off of right now. Some day.. hopefully.

  16. Big thanks to our fabulous hostesses. I'm glad to have such a great group of writers all around.
And for those who are far away from other scribblers, three cheers for Facebook, Twitter, and blogging! Online friends are better than writing in a cave with only your cats to keep you company...not that I'd know...

  17. Hey,

Ohhhh soooo jealous, but laughing at the candid pics... I can *see* a lot of life and laughter in the event... just have to tell DPK not to be going back to the kitchen for seconds :)

PS...Morg, good grief, woman, can you not share a bit of that hair with some of us more folicle-ly challenged peeps :)

  19. Hi Morgan .. sounds like a great time - love the pictures and the get together .. I hope next year to be able to get out and meet some others here in the UK .. they're not nearby - but I love to travel around ...

    Cheers Hilary

  21. Oh looks like you all had such a great time! And I'd love to connect with all the writers that live in my area except, there aren't any! How about you all come over here to France. I'm sure you could find inspiration over here. (:

  22. I can see what a fun time all of you had! I love hanging with writers :)

  23. Sounds like you had a great time! I'm always surprised when I find out yet another person in the writing blogosphere turns out to be from Utah, since that's not exactly a state I'd expect to have tons and tons of writers. There are a few writers' groups in my area, but I don't think they're really that big or active, and the one that I know is at a convenient location meets at the same time as one of my spin classes.

  24. I'd move to Utah, but my goal is to get closer to the ocean. But yeah, Utah is loaded with writers!

  25. Oooh I shall have to try and make the next one! Holidays are so tricksy. But I don't have to go anywhere for Christmas. Hint Hint.

  26. Thanks for having a party! Good times. Oh yes, good times. And we'll be on the look out for the book of yours.

  27. Gah, so fun!!! I wish I had writers nearby, but as far as I know it's just little 'ol me. :)

  29. Looks like you had an awesome time. So jealous I live so far away. *stamps foot* It's just not fair. Speaking of stamping feet and throwing hissy fits...I must email you. I've much news.

  30. Great pics Morgan! And I love your ruffled, messy-haired look... it's charming... "au naturelle" :)
Looks like you had loads of fun... *sighs* I'm so envious of you writers... there are sooo many of you in one area! It's not fair!

  31. Makes me wish I was in Utah!

I did meet with 25 other NaNoWriMos a couple of weeks ago. Had a write-in where we actually locked a library's doors and wrote, and ate, and goofed off for 7 hours. Wish more blogger buddies were closer to me here in St.Louis.

  32. How fun, Morgan!! Fantastic to get together with a group of talented writers. Writing is such a solitary pursuit, it helps to know others are out there walking the same road. Love all the happy, smiling photos - esp. of the one with the 'orphan-messy hair'!

(I adore that cover for the Inventor's Secret - even as an adult it makes me want to read it...)

  33. I'm taking this as my cue to move to Utah. That is the place to be apparently :D

  43. Gosh, it would be so much fun meeting up with fellow writers, especially local ones. Thanks for sharing what looked like a very fun time.

    ReplyDelete
  44. That is SOOOO cool! Yes, there are writer peeps in my area, and those writers introduce me to new writers, and on and on it goes. It's great to talk to other people who don't get bored when talking about story structure :)

  45. Too much fun going on in this house. And Utah in general.

    ReplyDelete
  46. So much fun! And I think your hair (and the rest of you) is adorable, by the way.

Until he sells his Chicago condo, I'm lucky to get to live near the fabulous Michael DiGesu. We've gotten together a couple of times & we've got another one in the works---would be the ultimate in fun to gather a whole group of us. It's so cool that you actually did it. :)

  48. I AM SOOOOOOO JEALOUS! I want to be there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys look like you're having a ball! What a lovely home you have too! Everything looks awesome.

I am happy for all of you to be able to spend time together. I wish we had more people here in Chi town. But as Nicki said we get together on occasion but not as much as I'd like! And I see Melissa Bradley every once in a while, but not nearly enough. The rest of the Chicago writers are to busy I guess.
