10.17.12.

Tomorrow is my one-year blogoversary!

I’m a nostalgic person. So it’s been fun to reflect on the past year blogging. I went back to look at my early posts (and actually found myself quite obnoxious). I was really overly bubbly and said things I thought were funny, but actually weren’t. I used a ton of exclamation points and all around I think I was trying too hard. It’s crazy, how much we can change in a year…

It’s interesting how we each have our own blogging voice—and how different it can be from our writing voices, or our every day voices. For instance, I always know I can go to Mark, when I know I need a laugh, or Alex, when I need to tune in for blogosphere news. EJ when I need an inspirational post, or Jolene when I want to feel grounded. This little writing world is such a fabulous tight circle. And a strength. It’s fun. And it’s SO much more than “creating a writer’s platform.” Which was how it started.

And I never would’ve guessed a year ago what kind of friendship/support I would’ve found.

A year ago I was afraid I’d look like a fool if no one commented. A year ago I pre-planned posts, reading them a bazillion times before I posted them. A year ago I stressed about what I was saying and how it would be received. A year ago I didn’t know who I was as a writer.

And the list goes on.

And it couldn’t be more opposite now.

This little community is amazing, and I honestly don’t know how anyone makes it in this business without all of you.

So on that note, I want to highlight a couple of new blogs you should go check out. Angie and Ryan G. You guys both rock! Let’s show them some love! Also, thank you, Gloria, for your kind shout out to me this week.

How long have you been blogging? Hit your year anniversary yet? Have you changed at all since you first started? Addicted to this community?

Red. Head. Out. :D

  1. Nice! Tomorrow will be an ultra special one.

Me blogging? I think year #4 is creeping up on me. Not sure what I plan to do if I'm going to do anything at all. It's fun to look back and see how much you've grown as a writer, eh? :)

  2. Happy one year! I've never thought you were obnoxious.
Next month will be three years for me and both my blog and I have changed so much since then. And all because of this awesome community!

  3. Happy blogger anniversary!

I can't remember how long I've been here, seems like forever, but it is an awesome community.

  4. Happy Blogiversary! It really is amazing how much you can learn in a year. I started blogging in January, and I had absolutely no idea what a "query" was, and thought that the book I've been working on the longest would be my first publication. Ha!

  5. Happy blogoversary!

I've had my current blog since March 2011, though I had a relatively popular website at Angelfire from fall 2001 (began adding real content in January 2002) to the fall of 2010. Some pre-Vatican II wingnut (who's in serious need of mental help, to say the least) and her sycophantic friends got all worked up about something I wrote, and had my entire website deleted. As a result, I'm much more careful about what I write on my current blog. I stick to mostly writing-based posts, or personal opinions that don't go into politics or anything else likely to offend someone of a different opinion.

The vast majority of my earliest blog posts were super-long, though at least not as long as many of my old Angelfire writings. I've worked hard to get my average post down to under 1,000 words, and don't post long essays on serious subjects like I did at Angelfire. I finally realized that that's not what people read a blog for, 3,000+ word essays on things like the ethics of using animals in circuses. I had to break up some of my old website posts into series when I reused them on my blog, like the ones on silent film and classic comedians.

  6. Very cool.. glad I happened upon your blog Morgan, you've got no idea how inspirational and motivational your words are to me, and I'm sure many others who aren't as vocal as I am. Here's to another year, and watching you get your big break before the next year passes. :)

  7. Congrats Morg! Yes, I've changed my blog several times since I started blogging, lol. I read some of my earlier posts and I cringe. Does that mean I now know where I want to take my blog? Ummm, no. I guess some things never change!

  8. You've only been at this a year? Crazy! I thought it was longer...

I'm so glad you blog, Morgan. You're wonderful! Happy blogversary!

  13. I think I can safely say the blogging community is lucky to have you, Morg. :-) Blogging, like writing, shouldn't be static. It should be organic. We have to grow into things, I think, and develop our own flow and feel. It's great hearing how you've progressed, and also flattering to think I might've played a small part. (I know you have in my own growth as a blogger.)

I thought your observation about blogging voice versus writing voice was very interesting. Mostly because I think you're 100% correct. If I blogged like I write, well, it might be a touch aggressive. lol

In the end, I strive to treat my blogging friends the way I'd treat any coworker. Which is to say I try to be supportive, encouraging, respectful, and above all, try to be someone I'd like to work with. I probably don't get to share as many inside jokes with you all, but I definitely view us as being in the same boat, trying to reach the same destination. And I hope I can make the trip a little more fun for everyone.

Congrats on the 1 year, and I hope I'm lucky enough to still be blogging when you hit your 5th.

  14. One year? You make is look like you've been doing this for longer than that! Early Happy blogiversary! I won't hit my one year mark until February, so I'm still in the checking my blog post a million times before posting and stressed out over blogger stuff. Good to see things ease up after a year. And yes, the online writing community rocks! Hugs(:

  15. Happy Blogiversary!

I've been blogging a year and a half. You can probably tell by all the grammar mistakes I let slip into my blog. I really should stop that.

  16. Happy Blogoversary, Morgan! Here's to many more. :)

  17. Congratulations on your blogaversary! That's a big milestone. If you've changed so much in the last year, I wonder how much more your blog will have changed in another year! That's the good thing about blogs - they're adaptable.

  18. I haven't hit my anniversary yet. I love, absolutely love, love this great writing community in the blogosphere. If it wasn't for you, I probably wouldn't be blogging.

Seriously, Mark is funny and Alex is surely informative. But what really gets me is how do all ya get over 300 followers in one year!?! I don't get that.

And oh yeah, I'm addicted to this community as well! I could stay on the computer all day long visiting a million blogs and then some but gotta stick to reality, it can't happen. Just enjoy it to its fullest. And if it wasn't for Blogger, our connections COULD NOT BE MADE. After all, they made it POSSIBLE.

    Great post! Happy Anniversary! *hugs*

I feel like I've been blogging forever, when really...I've been on and off and all over the place forever. Haha!

  23. Gosh, I went past my one year and didn't even notice. But I'll have to say, it took me a while to hit my stride too, so we don't need to count those first 6 months. :) It takes a while for some of us to figure it out.

    Happy Blogiversary!

  24. Congrats! I've only been at this a week, so anything you say here will amaze me! Best wishes for another eventful year of blogging!

  25. YAY YOU!!!!!!!!!!

  26. Congratulations on hitting your one year mark. Me, I have a few months to go, but I can see change in me since I started, already.
But growth is what it's all about, so you go girl:)

As for using lots of exclamation points, I still do that. I probably always will. That, my dear friend, is just me.

I love celebrations. I'll send over some cake, ice cream (what's your favorite flavor?) and balloons. Oh, and a present!!

  27. Confession:
I actually clicked on my name above to make sure you were talking about ME, lol.
    Grounded?
    Really?? lol.
    I'm glad.
Unfortunately, that particular talent, doesn't always work on MYSELF, ;-O

  30. Congrats Morgan! Like you, practically year ago I wondered what I was doing. But like you I've learned alot since then. My blogoversary is October 25 so we'll both have one-year olf blogs this month. *claps* I haven't been reading your blog for as long as some of your long standing blogger friends but I enjoy what I've read and glad we met blog to blog.

  31. Congratulations, Morgan! *Hug* I'm almost at 1.5 years now. Back then, I would re-read everything, too. I'll admit it: I tried too hard! LOL Now, I write like I'm talking to my friends--because I am. :)

  32. Happy blogoversary!

I've been at it a little longer, but I go back and forth about it. Sometimes I don't have time (like when I'm trying really hard to do three things all at once). Sometimes, all I seem to have is time (like when I'm waiting for revisions to come back to me). And yeah, I never expected to love this community so much.

  33. SHOVES DOOR WIDE OPEN...goes to throw heavy jacket on top of all the other jackets and realizes he lives in Hawaii.

    He stops to think...

Throws gaudy Hawaiian shirt on top of heavy jackets (happy in the knowledge that his long-standing habit of wearing two gaudy Hawaiian shirts whilst attending one-year Blogging Birthday Parties has been of some use.)

Finds Morg and says, "Sorry I'm late, but yahhy to you - and thanks to you, I am a better writer."

Following your journey (even when I'm late) has been a blessing and you are a true, trusted friend:)

Looking forward to hearing many more success stories and goals reached :)

    You. Rock. Seriously.

  35. Congratulations on hitting a year! I think the number of followers you have accrued in such a short period is a testament to how enjoyable your posts are. I like your perspective, which is both honest and fun. You often express things that I have been going through, whether good or bad. Glad I found you!

  36. I've been blogging for about a year and a half (I think--maybe I should check). My "blogiversary" passed without notice.

It started as a "build a platform" thing, but now it's more just a conversation with friends.

    And yes, I'm absolutely addicted!

  47. You've only been blogging a year? Pft. Never woulda guessed.

I agree about the writing community. I was so nervous when I started blogging, but you guys made it easy. ;) Congrats on your blogiversary! You're doing great. :)

  48. Happy anniversary! Blogging helped me grow as a writer so, so much. I think I really found my voice in the conversational style of blogs. It loosened me up.
My first blog post was May of 2010 and I've never thought about celebrating the anniversary. I did notice when I did my 200th post though. That was neat.
I would be lost without the online writing community. I'm glad you're in it. :)

  49. I know when I first started out I planned every little detail. I enjoy it much more now that I'm a bit more lax :P
