Great Characters With Canes...

I know, a bit random...

But since I'm still immersed in my WIP, and not wanting to go too deep today,  I thought I'd share just a bit about my leading man.

He has a cane.

I find canes sexy.

Is that weird? (Please tell me I'm not weird!)

If you know me, you know my biggest celebrity crush is Hugh Laurie, Aka Dr. House. I'm not sure if it's him or the cane that is so appealing... maybe both.

What about Harry Dresden? One of my all time fav book characters from the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. I mean, look at that pic! He wouldn't be nearly as cool without his staff (which is totally cane-esque)

Or the Luscious Lucius Malfoy? Yup. Take out the cane in this picture and he loses quite a bit of his power presence.

And what about this little guy? Without the cane, he'd just be a peanut in a top hat and monocle. Okay, so those are definitely cool... maybe he's the exception.

Do you have a favorite character with a cane? What is it about them that add mystery and power? Or is it just me?

I also wanted to give a special shout out to these folks who have been so kind to tag me or give me an award this past week:

Go check out their sites and follow!

Red. Head. Out. :D

  1. You are not crazy, a cane can be very sexy, just not on peanuts.

  2. I do like canes. Plus they come in handy if you need to smack someone.

Luscious Lucius Malfoy? I admit the cane adds to his presence but I always found him creepy.

  3. LOL, I adore you!

Canes don't really do anything for me, but I definitely think Lucius Malfoy is HOT!

  4. Lol, this is awesome. No, I don't have any characters with a cane, but I so will now!

  5. Never given the cane much thought actually but there is certainly some power to it. I suppose it matters why they have a cane. Is it for a limp? Is it for a weapon? Is it just because canes are fashionable in their world? Is it to be weird? Questions you have to think about.

But I love House, and Malfoy, and Mr Peanut so you know maybe I like canes more than I thought I did.

  6. House is cool. Finding canes sexy isn't weird, but if you find Mr. Peanut himself sexy, then I might worry.

  7. Um... I think it's just you! Lol, it's just that I've never really thought about a cane in that kinda way before...

Anyway, ahem, another nudge in the Cassandra Clare direction... In the Infernal Devices series there's a character (Jem) who has a cane. And there's a sword inside it! Awesome! (Now you MUST want to read some Cassandra Clare ;-) )

  8. You had me at "House". : )

I think a man with a cane can be sexy. But does it mean he's overcompensating for something? ; )

  9. Hahaha! This is hysterical to me, only because my husband has been telling me since we were dating that for his fortieth birthday he wants a really nice cane... possibly with a wand in it like Malfoy's. I've never thought of them as being sexy, but my husband thinks they're classy. I'll go with it, haha!

  10. LOL, now I want a cane, too. With a sword in it. ;)

I have one character in my WIP that has a cane, my MC's foster father who was injured, and I've found that it definitely adds some levity to scenes that would be too serious otherwise. (Using it to poke people and knock things over.) And though he's nothing like House, that aspect was definitely very House inspired. (Did I mention I love House?)

  11. A couple of those looked more like walking sticks than canes. It's probably better if it's not some really old geezer with the cane.

  12. I was totally going to leave a comment about Mr. Peanut and then scrolled down and saw that he made the list :) Nice. Canes can be cool, especially if the cane either conceals or becomes a weapon.

  13. great post! and i'm going to mss house so bad! his attraction is his ultimate apathy, love to see vulnerability through cracks in his tough exterior and the cane makes him tougher! what a character!

  14. Haha. You and your Hugh! Love it, girl. I'd have to say Gandalf the Grey/White is my fav guy with a cane. Ok, it's more of a staff but close enough.

My favorite thing with guys is a little stubble on the face. ie: Bono! Sigh. So blasted cute.

  15. LOL! I'm totally laughing over that peanut! hahaha!
And I'm in love with Hugh too! Seriously - I keep wondering how I an be attracted to such an A-hole (on HOUSE), but I am. Love that guy. He's so sexy. Maybe it's the cane!!!

And you're awesome. Love your posts and love your comments on my blog. You always make my day better :)

  16. My hubby wants to get a cane because he thinks they are so cool. They are cool, but for fictional characters! hehe.

  17. WHY HAS NOBODY SAID GANDALF?!?!?!?!?!

  18. The first answer I thought of to your question was Gandalf--but then I thought: does that count as a cane, or is it a staff?

  19. Hey...I have a character with a cane in my book! *chuckles*

  20. My first thought was Merlin. Although it falls in the same category as Gandalf,I consider a staff as one style of cane.

  21. Ummm ... yeah. I think you're a little weird. But I love you anyways. ;)

  22. Mr. Peanut?!? Hahaha!!! That was hilarious! My first thought was of Mark doing that one crazy cane dance.....amazing.....I'm surprised you didn't put a pic of him up there ;)

  23. Too funny! And I thought wide shoulders were the bomb. I'll have to tell hubby it's okay that his knees are going bad, but he'd probably whack me with the cane if he ever gets one.

  24. Gotta say Cane's don't do it for me.
I gotta have that sexy half smile - the one that says I might be smiling, or I might just be way too cool . . . lol

Mostly I like guys who cock brows and push to standing . . .

  25. Okay, love the Dresden files. Haven't read nearly enough of those books but the ones I have read are awesome.

And LOVE House. Too bad its done this season :( But that's why we can buy the DVDs and watch reruns ;)

  26. New follower from Sara's blog! *waves*

I only like canes when they're used as dance props ;)

  27. I may have to rethink the fact that I've never given canes any thought before :-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I've always kind of given canes a "evil genius" association, and House does kind of fit well with that! Still, it does make for a great character trait!

  29. Yes. Canes are definitely cool....just so long as they aren't paired with some high-water pants and suspenders. :)

  30. You're not the only one with a thing for guys with canes. My list, in addition to House, includes Mr. Gold (Once Upon a Time) Mr. Bates (Downton Abbey) Willy Wonka, John Watson, The Doctor (One and Eleven have both used canes) Archie Craven (Secret Garden) and Fred Astaire.
